Jason,
They're 100% effective. :-) They all go where they're supposed to go.
Well, OK, that's a little slanted. For example, this post linked to /dev/null, which is technically a “bad link,” especially since it also referred positively to spam software. :-)
Actually, like everything, it depends how you measure it. About 1200 clicks in the last year. Six (!) just in the last ~14 hours. But one was my test click. :-) I've got enough referrals to usually cover my DH bill, a few bucks for charity each month, and to buy some books, but not enough to buy even the new micro-car I'd like.
Yeah, I like Amazon's kickback system too. :-) That and a few bucks gets me coffee.
Oh the shame. :-)

Kenn,
If you want to start a polite thread on acceptable linking methods, then maybe we'll discuss. Otherwise, I'd rather discuss good books or something...
BTW, Have you heard about the subdomain redirect trick some folks use? :-)
Now I gotta find a way to link to forum posts, kbase and off-site links with my referral. :-)
Call me an astroturfer and there'll be real trouble. :-)
Isn't there some basketball or racing on?
Cheers,
