What does the force DNS refresh actually do?

What does the force DNS refresh actually do?

Hello.

Not sure if anyone can answer this or if this is the right forum section...

Anyway, am wondering if anyone knows what the force DNS refresh function on the dreamhost panel DNS settings actually does in reality?

From my understanding I thought DNS all relied on the TTL values set up for the domain and so I'm wondering how you could possibly force a change through the whole DNS system.

Thanks for any info on this anyone can give.

Nick...

Only a guess, but I reckon it resubmits the info to the root nameservers.

Good guess, but nope. It forces the panel to resubmit zone information to our own DNS servers (ns#.dreamhost.com). This is really only useful when something else in the panel fails to do this, though -- if you find that you *have* to use it to get DNS to update, that's probably a bug and you should let us know about it.

If we can refresh root DNS server, I think it will be down in a minute by having too many requests tongue

The Panel allows a refresh once every 12 hours, so that's highly unlikely.
