Looks great Josh. I have noticed a quirk, which is that an email sent using Outlook (to SMTP) gets through fine, but an identical email sent to the same recipient gets filtered out as spam when Roundcube is used. It's also a pity that Roundcube doesn't support multiple SMTP servers when sending using different identities, as that'll also help reduce the number of false positives with spam filters.

Below are (censored) copies of the message headers:

Outlook + SMTP server (mail.myemail1.com with SSL) - received fine without problems.

Really slow at the initial login (3 - 5 mins) with large inboxes. Verified with other users in #dreamhost.

Login a bit slow though with my mailbox.

couple of regrets :
- width of the folder pane can't be changed. With 3 levels of sub nested folders it's a bit annoying.

- the compose message window is nice, but definitely would benefit of a wisywyg (à la tiny_mce, FCK editor, gmail, etc..) composing window.

- Loading a large folder takes forever and can't be interrupted, if you click by mistake in a folder thas has too many messages, leaving you stuck, waiting for the load to complete.

the header buttons of the panes dissapear when scrolling down. That is definitively annoying as you have to scroll back up to change the sort order if needed.

Other than the slowness (and i mean sloooooooow) of the folder loadings and these few regrets, the look and feel is quite good, much better than squirel :)

Thanks

Feels a little sluggish, but not so bad when I compare it to other webmail on other systems. In general, really nice, does what I want, great replacement for Squirrel.

Looks good. Bit slow, which I assume would be resolved before coming out of beta.

One thing though: I noticed the Junk Mail folder wasn't showing up. I couldn't see an option somewhere to show it. Am I missing something?

I sometimes get genuine items flagged as spam by mistake so looking at this folder is quite important.

Will DreamHost be keeping Squirrelmail as well as Roundcube?
If 'No', I may suffer a nose-bleed!

If both are kept, will 'Roundcube' be aliased in Apache so I can use a hosted domain URL like https://roundcube.example.com/ rather than something like https://round.example.com/ or https://rc.example.com/ in case it clashes with one of my own rouncube installs? smile

Really fantastic, I love roundcube, glad to see it's being considered as a replacement for SquirrelMail.

Are there any plans to have a means to connect to the server via SSL? It's really important to have a secure means of checking messages.

Thanks for all the work on this!

Nice work, Josh!

Roundcube is nice ... Though it doesn't yet have all the functionality of Squirrelmail (toggle selected, mass manipulation of selected, import address book, etc)) I'm not hating on it or anything, and I think it is great for those who like it.

I just hope it is an *option* instead of *replacing* the squirrel, which actually has more functionality (even if it *is* "fugly") wink

Having roundcube should be really popular; it is asked for a *lot* on these forums. smile

I like it a lot.

The roundcube website says that it can be skinned using XHTML and CSS. If it goes live, is there any chance of being able to skin the look to, let's say replace the dreamhost logo at the top with the logo of our own site for example? Basically being able to write our own theme for a domain.

Holy slowness!!! Although...after the looong wait it takes to get a folder loaded, deleting the junk mail that didn't get filtered is quick! But then, for the display to refresh with additional messages, it again takes forever.

I'll stick with the current best practice: forward everything to Gmail.

Excellent news, thanks for adding this as a beta. Was planning on installing it for myself on DH.

It is a little more sluggish than I am used to with my own install (on a local server but accessed over web) but that seems reasonable given there are more users using DH. The only thing missing really is access to the spam folder.

What version of RC are you using btw?

Maybe this will spur me to get a patch done for mass delete of a folder, rather than a page at a time.

1. Fix the cryptic login screen (use "Email address" instead of "Username").
2. Speed it up.
3. Integrate SpamAssassin - junk mail does not appear to be working properly.
4. When transitioning to webmail2.example.com (or whatever will be used), make sure all the DreamHost branding can be swapped for customer branding.

Hi all,

It looks great. At least now I can drop an other provider that I have that offers "nice" webmail and move my last domain at Dreamhost.

Something VERY important. The Dreamhost logo MUST be customizable. Either be able to change the picture on the domain lever or user lever or non existing at all.

I can not have customers been confused. At this moment SquirrelMail is used by my customers with minimum email requirements but there is no Dreamhost logo on the login page or working page.
This is very important guys.

Wishing you a great new year.

Dear all,
Since roundcube already has an export option it will be a good enhancement if it has an import option when it comes to address book contacts.
This is just an idea. Many people use email clients that can export in Comma Seperated Valius for example (Outlook, Plaxo.com etc) so in this way company users can very easily update address books in the webmail.

Just an idea gyus. Personally as I said before it looks great and the Logo is very important at this moment before it goes live.

TEST on Other Languages

I did some tests by using the Greek Language characters. All went OK. The translation is good on the website. Greek characters sent and viewed (received) OK.
This is great. Thank You.

One small thing I noticed. It shows the spell checker option when composing a message. When I pressed to check the email for spelling mistakes it shows no errors but I actually had some. Later I noticed that you can choose the language that spelling can be done and Greek was not part of it. This is understandable but at the line that shows to do spell checking you should add something like (Choose Language) in order not to have any misunderstandings.

Also for me the interface was a bit slow.

If you provide the wrong username, it gives a cryptic error message:

"IMAP Error: Could not connect to mail. at port 143"

It should instead say something more sensible like "Invalid username/password."

Roundcube is quite a sexy interface... a bit sluggish but so much better than squirrelmail. I'd definitely love it if it was a bit faster
... and it took me a minute to realize I had to double-click on messages to open them instead of just single-clicking them. Other than that, pretty much loved it

Very sexy indeed. Good job! Immidiate feedback:
1) Swedish translation looks great!
2) Am I stupid or can I not delete a contact in the address book once added?
3) Decent editor (ref: previous poster) would be almost a neccessity (misspelled?) to blend in with the otherwise so web-2.0-ish look and feel.
4) Don't ditch Squirrelmail just cause this is coming along. Squirrelmail is oldschool, funtional, and pure. Leave it alone will'ya. :)

In response to the missing fancy editor we all urge for. There seems to be one if you go Personal settings --> Identeties, and then double-click on you ident and then checking the old "HTML-signature" checkbox. So I guess the functionality is there huh? Tried adding a HTML-based signature but it looked crap as I chosed to compose a new mail, i.e., it rendered as plain text in the new message.

Re: roundcube.dreamhost.com

Posted on: 2008-01-11 04:34:00

Very nice! I love it. In fact, as I am regularly downloading my email and only use webmail at work or whilst travelling, this would be a welcome improvement to the sometimes tedious squirrel. Speed is fine, and I am on a very slow connection in Kabul, Afghanistan! Not bad. Maybe it's worse for people who actually use webmail as storage (counter to DH's recommendation IIRC).

Alas:

- yes, the logo needs to be customisable
- spamassassin integration needs to be of the same level as current squirrel, right now I see no junk mail control at all
- change the login screen to read "email address" instead of username and let people decide what is written behind it (like the @dreamhost.com now)

Other than that it's very slick and surely a welcome, up-to-date replacement for squirrel.

I guess I'll keep the squirrel on my bookmark properties...

My foldernames are long and thus obscured.
On the forum of roundcube.net also someone requested this.
I do not want to adapt my way of working again to the shortcomings (in my view) of a computerprogram
Both Squirell and also Pegasus can do this already for years.
If this does not change I vote for Squirrel or anyway the choice between Roundcube and Squirrel.

The RoundCube is "Cute", but this does nothing to help us business sites that need REAL functionality such as Calendars, Tasks, Manageable Contacts, and Appointments, etc.

Please PLEASE, PLEASE get ZIMBRA, or Scalix!!!!!

Otherwise, you might as well keep Squirrel Mail...it's FUGLY but basically functional.....who needs "CUTE" but AlSO BASICALLY FUNCTIONAL.....we NEED FULLY FUNCTIONAL.

Really Dreamhost, get with it. Right now I'm using Google Apps which helps but it's still not what our non-profit really needs for collaboration purposes......

I definitely appreciate the improved GUI - I would also consider telling people to go with dreamhost for e-mail hosting (normally I just tell them it's a great cheap way to get web hosting.... and they need ME to set it up [read: $$$$]).

I'm sure people will have input on small issues.
I like that it displays HTML pretty well.
I have a small mailbox (250 MB) and it loads Very quickly, no complaints about that.

I think when you click on Mailbox Settings, it should open in a new window (I mean, it asks you to login again, so it might as well be considered a totally different site) - AS IS, you cannot get back to your webmail easily.

This is my first post, so I apologize if I've somehow missed a discussion on this topic. I installed Roundcube last week by going to panel.dreamhost.com, editing my "Mail" settings and selecting "Use Roundcube." About 12 hours later, Roundcube was active on my system.

After a few hours of trying it out, I realized it was not for me. Until significant updates, I'm a squirrel mail man. I assumed a fix would be easy (I unchecked Use roundcube), but nearly a week later, Rounducbe still comes back.

How do I switch back to Squirrel mail? Any help would be appreciated.

I think you just need to uncheck the Enable RoundCube box in the Webmail section of the Dreamhost panel. It says that it may take a few hours to change back though. In the meantime , I have been able to access my SquirrelMail install even with RoundCube enabled by going to http://mail.mydomain.tld so perhaps this would also work for you. It will allow you access to your Junk mail folder at the very least while you wait for webmail to redirect to your SquirrelMail install.

The problem was that their automatic scripts to change DNS and such were not running for all users. You are not alone, it did the same thing to a lot of users. After DH fixed it up on their end my SquirrellMail was back the next morning. Now I have a new found appreciation for the little rodent :-)

Many thanks, Lord Eirias, for your helpful reply.

In reply to:

I think you just need to uncheck the Enable RoundCube box in the Webmail section of the Dreamhost panel.

I unchecked that box yesterday (and hit the save button) - perhaps I have not waited long enough. ???

In reply to:

In the meantime, I have been able to access my SquirrelMail install even with RoundCube enabled by going to http://mail.mydomain.tld so perhaps this would also work for you.

Thanks for the tip - it works! :-D

I enabled RoundCube through the web panel for one of my domains, and will continue to use it. Three things could use changing though. It would be nice for the logo to be customizable. Although junk mail seems to be visible, there are no junk mail controls. Attachments aren't sent with messages. But it's uncluttered, and for me, it loads faster than SquirrelMail. It's just customizable enough (identities, folders) to meet my needs and not make checking webmail a dreaded, cluttered, sluggish event. Thank you for offering this option, even if it is just to try out.

I'm having trouble with the attachements. If I attach only one attachement it sends ok, but two or more attachements only sends the last one or, also happened, sends no attachement at all.

This is the only problem so far...

sorry to sound so stupid, but what user name should we be using to test this?

OOPS! just saw the clue above...

i think this is one of those forums that DH sets up and never checks again. the problem with users wanting to switch back to the squirrel has not been fixed but ok there is a workaround. sending attachments still doesn't work. how is anyone using e-mail software that can't send attachments?! roundcube looks pretty, but i'd much rather have the ugly little squirrel handling my mail until these bugs are fixed. i think gmail has really got it down...and it's fast!

I find I can send attachments if I compose and send the message before RC has attempted to save the message to Drafts. If you wait too long and RC backups (copies) the message to Drafts then attachments seem to be lost. The message in Sent doesn't even show that you ever had an attachment.
So, compose and send attached messages as quickly as possible.

Bug:
When ctrl-clicking in IE7, each mail clicked opens in a new tab, making it pretty annoying marking several messages. Not sure if this is a RoundCube or IE7 problem.

Bug:
If clicking delete several times in a row (to delete messages one by one as they are automatically marked), you will get a nasty "Error moving message" (or something like that) error, and your inbox will mess up, displaying every message twice until you refresh the folder. Other actions (move, for example) will probably trigger the same error.

Mostly I would like integration with spam filtering.
I use spamato on the client side, which includes some collaborative filters such as Comha, Earl Grey, and Razor. I would _much_ rather have those filters on the server side! Even just spamassassin with bayesian learning so that I can flag items as spam and expect the filter to improve over time would be a good start.
Also, it doesn't look like it's possible to do anything with multiply selected items (such as delete or move multiple mails at one time).

Re: roundcube.dreamhost.com, filesize? 2mb?

Posted by: incd

PHP's or RoundCube's filesize limit is *way* too small, the default seems to be 2MB. Can DH lift that a bit? ~10MB would sound more reasonable.

http://roundcube.net/

"The user interface is fully skinnable using XHTML and CSS 2."

Will each domain have it's own source for skin customization?

If not...
will there be a header edit where we can point to custom CSS?

BTW, the logo should be a link with the logo graphic set as a background graphic; this does 2 things: it allows easier CSS customization per domain/site AND if viewed in many mobiles, the image is not displayed.

peace,

I just enabled RC, but I don't have the preview pane and can't seem to find any way to activate it. What am I missing?

In case anyone else is wondering, it looks like the Preview pane has not been implemented by Dreamhost yet. Here's the response from Support to my inquiry about RoundCube's Preview pane:

RoundCube is actually still in beta, but we're implementing a few more features before we make it official. I'll pass this suggestion off to the admin in charge of implementing RoundCube and we'll try to get it rolled into our official install soon. Sorry for any problems this might have caused you!

Roundcube managed to empty my in-box for me tonight. I was reviewing the trash folder, pressed the "Empty" link at the bottom of the folder panel and presto! my in-box was empty! I raced back to Squirrel hoping to find that Roundcube had just made an error in locating the folder but no joy. It's all gone.

On reviewing what I could have possibly done wrong I find that the "Empty" link is not even active when you're viewing the in-box.

Be cautious when emptying the trash.

Any plans to fix the emails getting blocked by as spam bug and let admins load custom skinning soon?

I am getting complaints that Squirrel Mail is too clunky from some of my users and was looking to upgrade them to RoundCube.

I was checking the user settings and changed the template. Now all I get is SERVICE CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE! Error loading template for mail. It claims thus:
PHP Error in /usr/local/ndn/web/roundcube/program/include/rcube_template.php (334): Error loading template for mail
