Beta-testing email logins using address!

Here's where you can talk about the little beta-test we're doing of a new mail authentication backend that lets you use the address of a mailbox instead of its username. Which is especially nice for those crazy m4854574 ones!

See my recent post to the http://dreamhoststatus.com/ blog for a wee bit more info!

Post good/bad experiences here! I'll keep an eye on this here forum!

Works for me. Does this mean we'll be able to point to 'mail.dreamhost.com' and 'webmail.dreamhost.com' in order to get our mail and login via this method? The reason I ask is that this would help fix the SSL certificate issue in both the browser and in Mail.app on OS X.

No, the cert stuff is unrelated! Except, yeah, you can go to webmail.dreamhost.com (that's always worked).

Doesn't work for me. Neither IMAP nor SMTP accept my username and password.

FWIW, I switched back and forth between the name and mbox #. It always worked when I switched back. I also verified that webmail is working.

SMTP is working for me.
If you're using Apple's mail it will prompt you for your password after the change (even if you have it saved).

Btw, thanks for the feature :-)

I was just going to bed and the cocoa has gone cold now. Ah well it is a sacrifice in the name of progress.

Yeah, just to be clear, it doesn't matter a lick what client you're using...

And it only works with the addresses that are tied to "real" mailboxes directly...it doesn't work with aliases or forwards!

If anybody has problems, you can private message me (the Send Private link at the top of all discussion forum pages) and let me know what settings aren't working for you.

Thanks a ton to everybody!

Please nate, next time DH is planning something that could knockout email for many users, would you please tell the appropriate person that a blog update needs to happen before that happens? I could have at least warned my clients that there would be some downtime.

There's still nothing about it up on the blog.

Now my email can't get 1 email account with the new setup, it only works with the m-name. My other accounts work fine.

Re: Beta-testing email logins using address!

Posted by: Geekshow
Posted on: 2006-05-31 21:57:00

I was just going to ask what was up with email authentication when I found this message. When I got my new account a couple days back, I ignored the advice to use m(whatever) as the username, and just used user@myhost.com(since that's what I was already doing at my previous server.) and using mail.myhost.com as the mail server

So anyway, my experience has been mostly good with this login method. Occasionally, I will get an authentication error though that will say that my password wasn't accepted. I found that by going to the webmail page and logging in that way, seems to suddenly make the password take through the email client too. Don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but thought I would post it either way.

Re: Beta-testing email logins using address!

Posted by: nate
Posted on: 2006-05-31 23:55:00

Yeah, when I was writing this stuff I would be passively tailing log files and occasionally see people just blindly logging in with address@domain and thought to myself, "Oh, well that's one less message Tech Support's going to have to answer."

And webmail logins won't affect it at all...it'll either work or it won't.

The crap this morning didn't have anything to do with the new mail auth stuff...just an unpleasant coincedence.

One other big upside to the new authentication backend is that configuring things is way, way faster, so changes made to the panel really should be live in a few minutes.

A big thanks to everybody for posting here!

Hi!

Nopes, it does not work for me on Mozilla Thunderbird.

Its quite strange, when i use:

username@domain as login name,

Thunderbird gives no errors...and the status bar below connects to mail server, authenticates BUT does not download the mail...even though there are mails in the server! And the status bar does not show the usual "There are no new messages on the server" when i have deleted mails using webmail!!
Staus bar indicates connection, authentication...nothing beyond that.

Something funny is happenning...

for the usual m******* as a username, all works well...connection, authentication and msg receive, and i see the usual "There are no new messages on the server" when there is no mail on the server.

I wonder what is the problem???

Assistance and feedback will be appreciated!

Stay well.

Have you tried sending a 'new' message to your email account from somewhere else? Thunderbird may have viewed the messages already in your account and marked them as read.
If Thunderbird does not download your 'new' message then it may be time to enquire further.

I am having the same problem. Since June 4th, Mail.app (Mac OS X client) won't pick up mail or synchronize mailboxes. This is also true when I try to login with my m****** account. I had just copied a bunch of mailboxes to my account, then tried copying a bunch more. The second batch didn't synchronize. The first batch did.

I end up having to use webmail, which is very frustrating. I already have three other web-only email accounts elsewhere that I have to check every day.

If you want, you can either send in a TS request, or just send me a private message here on the discussion board with the exact settings you're using...

Odds are either Mail.app is just slightly misconfigured, or you're mixing POP and IMAP access...remember, when a message is marked as read by IMAP, the POP server isn't going to download it to another client later!

The incoming mail server username on http(s)://mailboxes.<domain> should be changed when this feature moves to production use.

I've had no problems using this feature so far and I find it to be far more intuitive than the m######### usernames.

Right now that part of the webpage reads the old m######### username.

Re: Don't forget to change the mailboxes.<domain>

Posted by: matttail
Posted on: 2006-07-25 20:28:00

This feature moved to production use some months ago, see the newsletter arcives for an exact date. The mailboxes.domain.com has used a similiar system for quite some time - the same was webmail. The only place you had to use this m12345768 jazz was when setting up your E-mail client. But that's all in the past now.

If you're having issues logging into mailboxes.domain.com you should contact support.

--Matttail

m-based names are not yet in the past.

"The mailboxes.domain.com has used a similiar system for quite some time - the same was webmail. The only place you had to use this m12345768 jazz was when setting up your E-mail client. But that's all in the past now. "

When I visit https://mailboxes.any-domain-hosted-on-DH and login to any valid mailbox, the instruction I see there for email client configuration reads "Incoming mail server username: m#######". So apparently users are still being told to use the m-based numbered names here. I understand that the user@domain-based names are far more easily remembered, up and running, and have been for some time. These instructions should be updated to tell users to use the user@domain names instead.

I've filed a support request to correct this oversight.
