shared ftp directory?

I would like several users to be able to share an ftp directory, while also having their own private space too. While I'm somewhat familiar with UNIX, I don't know how to do this under Dreamhost.
Would it be best to do this using groups? Such as creating a shared space, and setting the group permissions so everyone can write to it. And then I would create symbolic links in a user's home directory to the shared ftp space?
Incidentally, is there a good way to administratively create these symbolic links in a user's directory, if they don't know how to?
Thanks in advance, and for any other suggestions as to how I can accomplish this. I've checked the wiki but haven't found anything specific to this yet.
