Hi all.
Is it possible to tell how many hits my site gets a day?
I look at my daily report and it says 883 requests...that's not how many people visited is it?

Are you using DH's statistic page which is located at http://www.yourdomain.com/stats ? If so, I usually track unique visitor by its host/ip. Try look at http://www.yourdomain.com/stats/#host, the information is there.

the 883 requests may be multiple requests from one visit so the number of visitors may actually be lower. I may be wrong but imagine your site pulls up an html file a css file and a javascript file plus any images I think that each file is counted as a request so each page visit is actually a number of different requests for different files.
You could use something like google analytics or reinvigorate to get more in depth information. These simply involve adding a bit of javascript in to the footer of your pages, depending on what you are using this should just be an addition to one file.

A place I found some time back was http://www.statcounter.com It is a website that has a FREE (yes, free, no strings or ad or other thing attached) Statistic sofware, web based. I use it and have the actual counter on my first (index) page and an invisible tracker on my other pages. This send the information back to my account at www.statcounter.com and when I log in there I can view, where they came from, whether unique, Country, area, ISP, how log they visited, what kind of OS they used, What kind of browers they used, their entrance page, their exit page, what link brought them here, etc etc.. LOTS and LOTS of free statistics. It won't cost you anything to take a look and I don't get money, perks, etc from it, just satisfaction in letting another DreamHost buddy know about this cool service.

Yes, you can check the unique visitors of your site every day. Some web statistics tools like AWStats provide such feature.
If you are confused by DH's default statistics tool "analog", you can install awstats by yourself. It is fairly easy. You can follow this article in wiki.

No, number of request is NOT number of people visited your site. Request includes something like pinging your site, pinging from search engine like googleblot. So most of the time, number of request is always higher than the number of visitors.

There is a "string." The "free" statistic sites get valuable information on all visits to your site, for free. The more sites they monitor, the more valuable it becomes, for them.

Just check them out. I disagree with Cichaladusa's comment. I have never had any problems, spam, etc from using them. They DO have a paid portion of their services, and that is what they are hoping for if you use them. If you are pleased and have a lot of traffic reporting to keep track of, say in a business, then they do have a paid portion of keeping track of over 500 logs. Other than that, it's free. Highest (5 cows) from Tucows and 5 stars from Internet Magazine. If you go to their main page you can check out some of their customer feedbacks as well. You are getting mine here.....right now. I recommend them highy as a NON paid happy customer. My wife uses them for her webpages and is very pleased with them. They also have a 0 (ZERO) tolerance for spam.
Personally, for smaller "home" sites it really can't be beat. Even useful if you have a small business or Home Office Business.

Possibly a little on the paranoid side, but then again who knows how true.

I'm quite sure that some tracking is generally always present. Even here, there are probably cookies that keep track of personal preferences, etc. The code I placed on my web pages that I got from www.statcounter.com are java based that basically "phone home" to my account there and arranges and sorts the info for me to have a look at. When I open up the main page for statcounter.com, there are some "ads" in there if I wanted to click, but I just go to my account and use my username/password and check to see the stats on who visited what pages. "Who" is pretty generic. I know what country and what ISP they use, but I don't know "WHO" specific really visited. If I had a business, I could see the pages with the most interest on them from the page hits. If I had a business I would see who was attracted to the site and from where, geographically speaking, they might be.
I'm not saying that www.statcounter.com does not reap some benefit from my using their service, but, because of using their services, I have not had any increase of email spam, offers, phone offers, unusual emails, etc.
In their forum site they have a discussion where you can leave feedback good or bad about them and voice your opinion. The only negative I have seen is from those that have paid services, and that is a matter of having more for less.
Like I was stating earlier, there is nothing I gain from someone going there and trying out their services. I am a free account there anyway. It's just one persons gift to the community to have a peek at something that someone else might truly like.
