Hey everyone,
Newbie here. Interested in creating a blog/forum page similar to this one for my website. Has anyone ever done this or does anyone have any knowledge on how to do this? Any help is appreciated.

Are you still trying to create a community type site (like the one I'm putting on http://oshietekudasai.com)? I had responded to you in pm and you didn't ask anything else so I thought you had it all figured out. The easiest thing for you to do is go with cms. I'm using drupal but there are other types. Most cms software either has it's own forum/blogging capability or has a way for you to integrate existing forum/blogging software into it to make it easier to maintain.

hehehe well cms means content management system. It's basically a software package that lets you administer and maintain your site a lot easier than if you just built it page by page. This allows the administrator to do almost anything without knowing much about coding and what not. drupal even has a module you can install to use a gui editor on the pages you make and I'm sure other packages have similar things to install. Once you start using cms for your site you will probably never go back to making single static pages by hand (well you are doing that more or less, just within the system). For one thing, it's a lot quicker. Your site is up and running in no time, all you have to do is add content and features (I am still always exploring new things to add!). Why don't you start out with a default drupal install and add modules that seem like what you want. http://drupal.org. Drupal is a bit more um...unuserfriendly (is that an actual word?) for admin than some packages (like joomla that i've never actually done anything other than install so I can't tell you more about it). http://opensourcecms.com has lots of information about the different php/mysql type software. They also have live demos of a lot of them so you should try it out. They are refreshed every 2 hours and you can tamper with most of the features.

If you want to create a forum site like this one, look no further than Dreamhost's One-Click install of phpBB.
It's not the exact same script, but I think it'll give you what you're looking for.

not the exact same script? isn't even close really XD. But lucky for all of you who use phpbb, http://www.phpbbhacks.com exists. Please note that 'hacks' simply refer to modifications to software like phpbb to add features/more functionality. There is probably one somewhere on there that deals with giving users a blog (i don't use phpbb so i don't know...i know there are invisionboard and probably ikonboard hacks for that...)
If you want a community driven website though, you should definately use CMS. If all you want is a message board and a blog then yes it is less hassle to build off of a message board script. I have yet to see cms (portals...) without some sort of forum/blog/album capability -- if not out-of-the-box, with modules that can be installed without you fiddling with underlying scripts. Besides, installing forum hacks isn't for everybody, I use to deal with that stuff a lot so I know how deep the rabbit hole can go :)

I would say the phpBB's ability for people to create forum discussions is very similar.

If you want to see what phpbb looks like you can see mine at http://www.silkrooster.com/forum Scroll down to the bottom of the page and that section allows guest to post messages. Just put "this is a test" in the subject line and I will remove it later.
Also in the DH panel for one clicks is wordpress which is a blog and can run in another directory, giving you 2 programs to use.

I had responded to this guy's earlier post in another thread and he was asking for more than just a forum and a blog. My response has carried over a bit XD. True, most forum scripts would be similar to what we have here. I just meant that a cms is much more than just that aspect of it.

Thanks all! I will look into what everyone has suggested.The CMS format is something that sounds like something I will want to eventually go to so I will try downloading drupal like you said Ryo. But I will try the script suggested format if it seems easier.

I'm just gonna let you know right now that Drupal, while it is very good, it is also a tad complicated for the average person. Something like mambo or joomla might be more userfriendly for you. opensourcecms.com is running on mambo in case you hadn't noticed it XD.

this may sound very stupid, but I guess better to sound stupid in the beginners forum than else where, but I have downloaded the drupal pack 4.6.5. However there is no install.exe file or any other kind of execute command. Is it a patch to another software or do I need to get the original program or am I just talking out of my ( )( )

Um, were you actually reading the install instructions? You should you know. There are a couple of files you will have to edit with a text editor (notepad if that's the only thing you have). You will need to create a mysql database from your control panel too and make a note of the database name, the username added, and the password you chose because you'll need it for your configuration.
I just noticed that joomla is available from one-click installs from the control panel. If the drupal stuff isn't making sense to you, why don't you try joomla first? Drupal really isn't for the faint of heart nor the uninitiated :-S (I like it but I'm use to installing things like that so it's not difficult for me to whip it into submission).
