Convert DVD video to streaming video?

Hello,

I'm a total beginner when it comes to video. I have a two-and-half-hour lecture that's recorded on two standard DVDs -- the kind that play in a regular DVD player. I have the rights to the lecture and full permission to use it in whatever way I need.

I'd like to convert it to streaming video and embed a video on a site that I have hosted through Dreamhost.

Can someone give me some guidance on how best to do this? Freeware solutions are preferred, but I'm willing to spend a little money, if necessary.

I've tried searching the support Wiki, but there doesn't seem to be anything there about converting from DVDs. I also e-mailed Dreamhost support, but they said this question is beyond their scope.

You could convert them locally to flv (or swf) using an encoder.
