Wordpress question: Permissions?

Hey all, simple question I think. I installed wordpress have it all up and running but when I try to upload I get this message.

"Unable to create directory /home/.wycliffe/blah/blahblach/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/11. Is its parent directory writable by the server?"

I have made all the file permissions writable on the folders. What do you think might be the problem? M

The directory should be writeable due to the ssh user's privs.
