Mediawiki in subdomain root, clean URLs

I followed the directions found here, http://wiki.dreamhost.com/MediaWiki#Beautifying_URLs and here, http://discussion.dreamhost.com/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=3rdparty&Number=29150&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&part= and neither one worked for me.

I have my MW installation in the root of a subdomain so my installation isn't quite the way that it needs to be. (I've had it for a couple of months so I installed it before I knew anything about clean URLs.)

Does anybody know a way I can get clean URLs or at least point me in the right direction?

Chris

It depends: Do you want MediaWiki in /wiki/, or do you actually want it in the subdomain root?

It's already in the subdomain root (I started it a couple of months ago before I even knew about clean URL's). Can I just move it into a /wiki/ or /w/ directory or is it too late for that?

By all means; just adjust the settings in your .htaccess and LocalSettings.php files to match those described in the article. Any inbound links to specific pages on your site will be broken unless you set up additional rewriting/redirection, but other than that it should be fine.
