Large file uploads in Gallery

I am trying to find out how to change the upload file size limitation on the one-click install of Gallery, it seems to have a limit of 7MB. I have read some information on the Gallery home page about changing the php.ini file but being new to dreamhost and php stuff I have no idea where I might find this file or if I need to create one what it should contain other then the line the Gallery folks want and where to put it. There is also mention of modifying/adding a .htaccess file but again what and where? Thanks for the help! Ron

This limit is set by DH. To gain access to the php.ini file, you would need to upload your own version of php. You should find instructions on the DH wiki. Also at php.net.

An easier way would be to first FTP your large file to your server and then select "Upload from local server" in Gallery2 to select the file and import it into your gallery.

I tried to do this, but it doesn't seem to work...has anyone
successfully upload and imported large files this way???
if so, are there any little tricks that i migt be missing?

Hmmm... sorry, I may have provided bad advice. My Gallery has some large movies on it (>>7MB), and since I always import from the local server, I just assumed this was possible. Unfortunately, I realized that these movies were already in my Gallery before I transferred my Gallery to Dreamhost.

There's another thread on this ( http://tinyurl.com/hlcms ), and unfortunately, it doesn't appear that there is much that can be done. Maybe we can each individually email Dreamhost support about this to help them realize that this is important to a number of their users.

Or better, use the cool Suggestion system in the panel. Here's the one you want, although I don't know why it says 8 instead of 7; note convenient for and against voting links :-)

I don't know why people don't just want to compile php on their account. Then they wouldn't have to worry about the restrictions (within reason...). It's a pretty simple process. You just sit there and watch the screen until it finishes and then edit your .htaccess file lol.

no, you were right, using upload from server works!
the first time i tried it i must have chosen a bad directory,
but the second time i tried it worked...very easy work around!!!
much less work then compiling and maintaining your own PHP.

Speaking for myself, I don't install my own versions of stuff like this because I just don't want to deal with it.

Before buying my DH account I ran my own web/mail/etc servers and I gave that up because I got tired of admining servers all day at work and then going home and doing it on my own systems. The benefits to installing my own stuff are minimal, and I can live without them if it means I also don't have to keep up on security patches and the like. That's what I'm paying DH for.

I just spewed my morning coffee all over my laptop keyboard when I read that. Kenn has a valid point, though. We all say (me included) "just compile your own version," but doing it carries some level of risk. The default DreamHost PHP5 installation suits my needs perfectly, so I've never had to do my own PHP compile. Still, I can imagine (especially with today's fancy shmancy digital SLRs) that 7Mb can seem a bit limiting sometimes.

I'm thinking of upgrading to php5 myself but if my web store broke I'd be pretty upset. I guess I'll switch over oshiete instead since it uses drupal as well so if something breaks on there I will be able to try and fix it whenever I get ready (or find out how). There was only one domain that I needed to compile php for and there's nothing in particular on it, I just needed to enable fopen and such since I had no luck changing the script to use curl *sigh*
