Installing Gallery 1.5-pl1

Hi,
I've just got my dreamhost account up and running and want to install gallery. The latest stable release is gallery 1.5-pl1 which can be obtained via http://gallery.sf.net.
It seems things have changed from the various write-ups I've seen about installing gallery to a dreamhost account and I cannot for the life of me get the PHP session data to save. I've tried following gallery's doc, the instructions in dreamhost's wiki, and these directions (http://www.wombatnation.com/misc/installGalleryDreamHost.html) with NO success... I always get session save errors like the following:
Warning: open(/tmp/sess_429f50b0887ae0f19e4a078a53f87565, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown().
Can someone please help me with this installation?!
