WordPress Upgrade issue

Love WordPress. Have had it up and running for a while now.

Anyway, today I had a wild moment and started the upgrade process. First I READ THE DIRECTIONS. I know, what a concept, eh?

Then, I changed the name of the directory the original blog was in. /blog/ became /blog_old/. Then I did the one click install thingy whatsit, putting the upgrade in the /blog/ directory. I did this with the assumption that changing the original to a different then doing the upgrade in the now empty original URL would suffice.

Got the email with a link within a minute. (go DH!) Clicked on the 'if you are upgrading...' link. Now I get this:

Can’t select database

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the paulao database.

* Are you sure it exists?
* On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?

Yes, it exists. No, DH doesn't require the prefix. So like, dudes, whats up?

I've looked around here and on the WordPress support forum but none of the answers quite fit this. All the smart people at the WordPress support are either DH members or WP developers. So I came here.

and it failed.

I downloaded the /blog_old/ and the /blog/.
Made sure they were on my computer.
Then I deleted them from the web.

Then I did the one click thingy again, still the same, dangit.

Well, first of all, please use the WordPress Support Forums next time. I know most of us WP Support "gurus" use DreamHost, but I'm the only one here.

Next, are you trying to upgrade? Why are you moving your blog files? You don't have to. Try going back to where you started (where your v1.2.2 blog was functioning in the /blog/ directory) and follow this upgrade guide.

I upgraded from version 1.22, whatever the latest DreamHost had to version 1.5 the other day.
I followed ti directions to a T and it went smooth.

This was all I had to do

-Delete the old WordPress files from your web host, except wp-config.php

(I moved mine to a different directory to save them incase something happened in the upgrade)

-Upload the new ones (make sure you have the files you saved someplace safe)

-Run wp-admin/upgrade.php to bring your database up to date

Hopefully you can get yours upgraded and working properly.

The guide took a while but it was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I wasn't able to do was CHMOD the files. I have WS_FTP Pro so I know it is possible. My brain is just fried from the workout I gave my delete button.

Oh, and for some reason, clicking on the theme I saved, it sends me to some website called 'My Blog' or something. I'll check that out later.
