GZIP and PHPBB

I'd like to use GZIP compression when backing up my phpbb database. However, GZIP support doesn't seem to be included in the PHP compilation - I'm getting "Internal Server Errors" when attempting to use it.
Anybody else successfully used GZIP with PHPBB here? I know it works at other hosting sites, just not here...
