If I install something for Joomla that has such a 'feature' is it going to cause problems on DH? I know it will affect SEO, but does this count as spammy behaviour?

That would most likely violate ToS #8 and get you booted:
Customer agrees to not engage in activities pertaining to Black Hat SEO, Spamdexing, and so-called "Scraper sites." These can all have a severely detrimental effect on server performance and are not permitted.

Thanks Scott,

I thought it might be an issue. I think this needs to be pointed out on the JED. That is that plugins should state very clearly that they contain advertising and could invalidate ToS. I only discovered this problem with this particular component by reading the reviews. It's a very popular plugin, !Joomlacomment. I would not have known.

Another thing to note is that even if DH wouldn't bump you, what's the point? Google will bump you off its index if you hide anything on the site from a user. If you're not ranking in Google, then you won't get any traffic to your site anyway, so those ads won't bring any money your way.
