deleting wordpress folders

after running into some connection trouble while i was installing wordpress on a site, i ended up having treinstalling it in a different folder the next day. now i want to delete the original wordpress folder, with all of its files and assets since they are obsolete, and it (the server) refuses to allow me to delete it/them.
anyone have any thoughts on this?
