installing PHP4

I'm sure some people will ask why I am doing what I am doing so I will explain first before I describe my problem. I have two websites in one domain and they are both database driven. One of the scripts is quite old and won't function on php5 and the other is new and won't function on PHP4. The main domain is the new site and the old domain is in a directory. The old site already has quite a few inbound links so I don't want to move it.
DH told me that I could install PHP4 using the info in this wiki - http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Installing_PHP4 but when I came to the 2nd step and entered "vim installscript" putty just shuts down. Does anyone know what i am doing wrong?
