Help with subversion

I have never used subversion but i am told that it is a good idea to use.
I want to be able to work locally and be able to send stuff to a development version of my app on dreamhost and then be able to also have a production version.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I am a total subversion noob and i'm not all that familiar with using terminal.
I am on a mac as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
